How to use the lumpsum calculator

  1. Enter the amount you want to invest at once, from ₹10,000 to ₹1 crore.
  2. Choose how many years you plan to leave it invested.
  3. Pick an expected return a year. Try two or three rates to see a range.

How to read your result

The result shows your amount invested, the estimated returns and the total value at the end of the period. For example, ₹1,00,000 left for 10 years at an assumed 10% a year comes to about ₹2.59 lakh.

Real markets don’t move in a straight line. The value of a lumpsum can go up and down, sometimes sharply in the short term. A longer time gives it room to recover from falls, which is why a lumpsum suits money you won’t need for several years.

Not sure whether to invest it all at once or bit by bit? Many people spread a large amount over a few months instead. We explain how that works on our mutual funds and SIP page and in a meeting.

How the lumpsum calculator works

A one-time amount grows by compounding: each year’s growth is added to the amount and then earns growth itself. P is the amount you invest, r is the yearly rate (12% is 0.12), t is the number of years, and A is the estimated value at the end.

A = P × (1 + r)^t

FAQ

Common questions

What is a lumpsum calculator?
A lumpsum calculator shows what a single, one-time investment could grow to over a number of years, at a yearly return you assume.
Is a lumpsum better than a SIP?
Neither is better for everyone. A lumpsum puts all your money to work at once, while a SIP spreads it over time and evens out market ups and downs. Many families use both. Compare with the SIP calculator.
Are these returns guaranteed?
No. The rate is your assumption, not a promise. Mutual fund returns are market-linked and can be higher or lower than what you enter.
How is this different from a fixed deposit?
An FD pays a fixed interest rate. A mutual fund has no fixed rate; its value moves with the market, so it can grow more or less than an FD. Read SIP vs FD for a plain comparison.
How long should I keep a lumpsum invested?
For equity funds, think in years, ideally five or more. For money you may need soon, other fund types or a bank deposit may suit you better. Our team can help you match the money to the right time frame.
