How to use the emergency fund calculator
- Enter your household’s monthly expenses: groceries, rent or loan EMIs, fees, bills and other must-pay costs.
- Choose how many months of expenses you want to cover, from 3 to 12.
- Enter any savings already set aside for emergencies, and how much you can save each month. Then see your target, what’s still needed and how many months it may take.
How to read your result
Emergency fund target is how much to keep aside. Still needed is the gap after your existing savings. Months to get there is how long it may take at the amount you can save each month.
For example, if your family spends ₹30,000 a month and you want 6 months of cover, the target is ₹1,80,000. With ₹50,000 already saved, you still need ₹1,30,000. Saving ₹10,000 a month, you get there in 13 months.
Keep this money somewhere safe and easy to reach, where its value doesn’t swing and you can get it within a day or two. It isn’t meant to earn high returns; it’s meant to be there when you need it. Our team can talk you through the options. Once it’s in place, you can invest with more peace of mind; see what a monthly SIP could grow to.
An emergency fund works best alongside insurance. Health insurance takes care of big hospital bills, and term insurance protects your family’s income, so the fund can handle everything else.
How the emergency fund calculator works
It multiplies your monthly expenses by the months of cover you choose to find the target. Then it takes away what you’ve already saved, and divides the rest by your monthly saving. It doesn’t add any returns, because this money should sit somewhere safe, not grow with the market.
Target = monthly expenses × months of cover; Still needed = Target − savings set aside; Months to get there = Still needed ÷ monthly saving, rounded up
